Cowboy builders are a still proving to be a big problem for consumers. And they’re a problem for us in the building trade too for the damage they do to the reputation of our industry. Before it was shut down in 2014 the Office of Fair Trading used to receive around 100,000 complaints every year regarding poorly executed building work.
That was the second most complaints for any one industry – the only trade that saw more was the second-hand car industry. According to the Government endorsed TrustMark scheme the cost of cowboy builders to homeowners is £1.9 billion every year, with one fifth of all homeowners who have work done having to pay to have the work corrected or completed by other builders.
It’s amazing too that few consumers realise there are measures in place to protect them against the cowboy builders. In the TrustMark survey of homeowners 57 per cent didn’t check out their builders’ credentials before hiring them, and 26 per cent had no idea about where they could find impartial advice on builders.
If you’re looking for builders you can rely on to work to your specifications and do a quality job there are schemes in place to help you find them. The Government and the building trade put their heads together a few years ago to fight back against the rogue builders.
There are databases, accreditation schemes, quality marks and assessments now that test the quality of a builder’s work. To hold a quality mark, for instance, their work must have been independently checked, customer references collected, and a code of conduct signed up to.
At Apple Solutions we’re building and refurbishment contractors who hold many quality marks and trade association memberships. We hold the TrustMark, Registered FairTrades, CHAS and CSCS marks and are members of the Federation of Master Builders. So we’re fully vetted and our credentials have passed rigorous scrutiny.
