A home bathroom and wet room specially designed for disabled access can make your life much easier if you are a wheelchair user or suffer from any form of physical disability. Designs for disabled bathrooms have come a long way in recent years due to research and development by The National Building Specification (NBS) group and other organisations.
We now have a template for the dimensions and equipment best suited to disabled bathrooms and wet rooms and quality standards in place that must be met. The quality mark BS8300 regulates building designs that are adapted to meet the needs of disabled people, whether they are wheelchair users, partially-sighted, or temporarily disabled following an accident or injury.
Key elements that make up a disabled bathroom include grab rails, an alarm cord, slip-resistant surfaces and a shower chair, toilet and wash basin all set at a certain height and position to make it easy for wheelchair users to manoeuvre themselves.
You may find that you’re entitled to a grant from your local council to contribute towards the costs of having a disabled bathroom and wet room installed at your home. Disabled Facilities Grants are provided depending on your household income and are designed to help you improve access and movement around your home.
That can mean anything from widening doors and putting ramps in place, adapting the lighting to make visibility better, to developing the bathroom to make it purpose-built for disabled access. You’ll need to speak to our local council regarding your eligibility for the grant.
If you’re looking to have a residential bathroom or wet room installed to improve disabled access then give us a call. At Apple Solutions we’re builders who handle every stage of projects from planning to the clean-up afterwards.
We’ll help to develop the plans for the bathroom or wet room, bring in the contractors for each stage of the job, source the materials, and make sure there’s no debris and mess left over once all is done.
We operate all over the West Midlands including Birmingham, Sutton Coldfield, Solihull and Tamworth. We’ll sort out an initial consultation as soon as you get in touch with us where we’ll discuss the project and your requirements – whether you’re looking for just a bathroom or a full wet room fitted out with a shower and drainage installed.
At Apple we hold quality marks including TrustMark and Registered FairTrades, CSCS, CHAS and you’ll find us on the UK Register of Pre-Qualified Construction Services and as members of the Federation of Master Builders.
